Sternberg's Spider Plant - an African beauty in your home and beyond....

Chlorophytum is a green plant belonging to the asparagus family. It reigns supreme on the windowsills of many Polish homes. The herbaceous plant is a perennial, naturally occurring in tropical regions of almost the entire world. The greatest diversity of herbaceous plants can be found in Africa. It is mainly associated with its long, bicoloured (green and white) leaves. It is most often grown in hanging pots, which perfectly show off the beauty of its pendulous leaves. Spider plant grown in pots usually does not exceed 50 cm in length and 3 cm in width. White, five-petalled flowers with stamens appear on long and thin stems.

Growing of Chlorophytum on the balcony and terrace

The Spider plant, which looks like an intense green grass in the form of a dense clump, can be successfully grown not only at home. It is perfect for the balcony, terrace and garden. It will decorate them from early spring even until October. It is a fairly cold-tolerant pot plant, tolerating temperatures down to 0°C well. It copes less well with frost. Due to its sensitivity to very low temperatures, the Chlorophytum plant grown outdoors is an annual.

Chlorophytum var.

The most popular species grown in a pot is Sternberg's all-green (Chlorophytum comosum). It is also sometimes referred to as tip leaf. Its varieties differ in the width of their leaves and their colouring. This is because the characteristic white stripe can be found in the middle of the leaves or around the edges. Variegatum, Bonnie, Ocean, Zebra and Vittatum are some of the more ornamental varieties.

Ribbon plant cultivation

Chlorophytum Sternberg can boldly be called, the iron pot plant. It is the best plant to start with, i.e. for all those who are just beginning their adventure with growing houseplants. You have to make a really big effort to prune it, and it is not expensive. So it can be your first plant experiment that will give you a lot of satisfaction. The basic conditions for growing herbaceous plants include:

✔️ position

In terms of growing site, Sternberg's Chlorophytum is quite tolerant. It is advisable to find a position for it that is bright, but with diffused light. It also tolerates twilight well. The effect of very strong sun is quickly apparent in the form of fading, curling or withering leaves of the herbaceous plant.

✔️ temperature

Chlorophytum is not demanding in terms of temperature and humidity. It tolerates a considerable range of temperatures above freezing well. It likes humid air, but will also do well in dry areas.

✔️ substrate

A good quality all-purpose substrate with an admixture of perlite, vermiculite or sand can be used to grow Chlorophytum. It will loosen the soil a little and ensure that water does not back up in the pot, causing root rot.

✔️ watering and fertilising

Sternberg's Chlorophytum should not be overwatered. It is best to water it when the ground has dried out. From March to September, it is a good idea to feed the herbivore with a suitable nitrogen-rich preparation. This can be a fertiliser for green leafed plants or biohumus.

Ribbon plant at home

Chlorophytum is worth having in your home for several reasons. It is a completely pet-safe plant. Even though it is fond of cats who nibble on it, treating the herbaceous plant like grass. It is more likely that it is the Chlorophytum flower that will not survive such snacking than it will harm the pet. The only exception is the Green Orange variety. A huge advantage of Sternberg's Chlorophytum is also their ability to cleanse the air of toxins. Indeed, they are on the famous list of air-purifying plants created by NASA. Chlorophytum is also an excellent plant for creating a vertical garden.
