If you love potted plants but have little time to care for them, you should think about growing epipremnums. It is a unique climber with air-purifying properties that is often found in our homes. Because of its low requirements and decorative foliage, epipremnum is also chosen for offices and public buildings. It can be successfully used to create vertical gardens or to form a boiling green ball.

Epipremnum - the perfect flower for your home
Epipremnum owes its popularity to the fact that it is a climbing plant. It is native to Asia, Australia and the Pacific islands. The plant's characteristic ornamentation is its waxy, heart-shaped leaves, which vary in colour depending on the variety. Epipremnum is distinguished by its rapid growth, and its stems can reach up to 5-6 metres in length, depending on the variety. Because of its ease of shaping, epipremnum is ideal for creating all kinds of compositions. It is also an excellent plant for creating a vertical garden.
Epipremnum - species and varieties
The species most commonly found in pot cultivation are: Epipremnum aureum (golden epipremnum) and Epipremnum pinnatum. The first species poses a slight problem in terms of nomenclature. Over the years, the plant has been classified in different genera and renamed several times. At first it was called Scindapsus goldenis, then Raffidophora goldenis, and finally it was renamed Epipremnum pinnatum 'Aureum', and finally Epipremnum goldenis. Attractive varieties of golden epipremnum include: Marble Queen with its mottled leaves, N-Joy with its smaller leaves with wrinkled blades and the Neon variety, which is perfectly suited to modern interiors.
Epipremnum requirements
Epipremnum is worth growing for many reasons. The most important, however, is its low cultivation requirements. The most important conditions you need to provide the plant with are:
✔️ position
Epipremnum prefers a bright position, but not in full sun. It is worth knowing that the brighter the leaves, the more light the plant needs.
✔️ temperature
The plant does not require a dormant period and can be grown at room temperature all year round. It grows best in a room with higher humidity, special attention should be paid to this during the winter.
✔️ substrate
Epipremnum grows best in a fertile, humus, permeable, slightly moist substrate, with a neutral or slightly acidic pH.
✔️ watering and fertilising
The plant expects systematic but moderate watering. However, care should be taken to ensure that water does not pool around the roots - this can cause root rot. Because of its strong growth, epipremnum should be fed during the season with fertilisers for potted plants with ornamental foliage.
What is worth bearing in mind when purchasing an epipremnum?
If you have decided to buy an epipremnum, you must remember that you will receive the plant in a starter pot. When transplanting the flower into a proper pot, make sure to provide it with drainage. Lime rock clay (for flower soil and additives, see substrates) is ideal. This will help keep the substrate moist and prevent root rot. Larger specimens of epipremnum can be purchased with a stake in the middle. This is because the shoots of the plant produce aerial roots that can cling to the support. However, it is not a self-watering plant and must be attached to vertical supports.
Interesting facts about epipremnum
Epipremnum belongs to the group of plants that purify the air. It is therefore worth having it near you. In natural Indian medicine, the plant is used as a medicine to increase sex drive, relieve diarrhoea cough and diarrhoea. The dried ripe inflorescence is used for this purpose. We recommend, however, that this is left to the realm of belief, to be very cautious and we do not recommend that this effect be tested personally. All the more so as the plant exhibits poisonous properties that are dangerous to humans and animals. For this reason, it is advisable to wear gloves when caring for it and, if you have children or pets, to place the plant out of their reach.
