Citrus in a pot
The distinctive taste of many citrus fruits is familiar to all of us. More and more people are also finding that citrus plants can be successfully grown in our homes. They can take the form of trees or shrubs. A common feature of citrus trees are the dark green, rather stiff glossy leaves. The flowers of citrus trees are distinguished by their white, cream or yellow colour and pleasant, sweet fragrance. The fruit in all citrus trees takes a long time to ripen. Depending on the species, from a few to several months. Popular citrus plants that are easy to grow in a pot include lemons, mandarins, kumquats, grapefruits, limes, limes, oranges and calamondins. When choosing a pot for citrus, make sure it is slightly larger than the root ball. Varieties intended for pot cultivation usually reach a height of up to 2.5 metres. However, we can decide on the height and shape of our citrus trees ourselves, as they like pruning.
How do you grow citrus trees at home?
Citrus trees can be grown successfully under Polish conditions. It's not as difficult as you might think. All you need to do is buy your dream plant and a pot that will display it beautifully and start growing. In order for citrus to feel comfortable in our homes, a few conditions need to be met.
✔️ position
An important factor in growing citrus is light. Citrus plants love the sun! Deprived of daylight, they will not enjoy flowering and fruit. Citrus plants also really like frequent sprinkling.
✔️ temperature
Under natural conditions, citrus are accustomed to heat. It is therefore necessary, at least to some extent, to recreate these conditions. In summer, citrus plants should be put out on the balcony, terrace or windowsill. In winter, on the other hand, they should find a place in the house. The optimum temperature during the growing season is 10-15°C. Citrus plants left indoors during this time will survive, but they should be placed away from heat sources. A space next to a balcony window will be a good place.
✔️ substrate
The substrate for citrus should be slightly acidic (pH 5.5 - 6.5) and permeable. A ready-made substrate for citrus plants works perfectly. You can also prepare the citrus soil yourself by mixing compost substrate with sand and nutrient-rich manure substrate. Sprinkle expanded clay at the bottom of the pot to prevent water standing in the pot.
✔️ watering and fertilising
During the growth and fruiting period, abundant watering is very important. Citrus plants prefer a moist substrate, but do not like overwatering. Citrus plants also need a lot of nutrients. They should therefore be fed with a suitable fertiliser, such as one dedicated to citrus plants. Both watering and fertilising must be done in moderation and with common sense.
