Zamoculcas ZZ Plants
Zamioculcas zamiifolia, referred to as zamioculcas zamiifolia, is a species of the picture family Araceae. Under natural conditions, it grows to about 1 metre in height. When grown in homes, it is also a showy plant. In its natural habitat, zamioculcas grows in rocky and dry areas, hiding in the shade of taller plants. As a result, the plant acquires extraordinary resilience. If properly cared for, Zamioculcas produces striking, dark green, fleshy and glossy leaves. These grow from an underground rhizome. It flowers infrequently under home conditions. In addition to its attractive appearance, Zamioculcas is regarded as a natural air purifier. It produces oxygen from carbon dioxide and filters the air of harmful substances. It is therefore ideal for the bedroom or office.
Zamioculcas - growing
Zamioculcas is a succulent often referred to as an iron plant. This is because it forgives many mistakes in cultivation and does not require special treatment. Because zamiokulkas stores water in its thickened leaves and tuberous rhizomes, it is the best plant for forgetful people. It will be perfect as a plant for the office, a plant for a restaurant or a plant for a hotel.
✔️ position
Zamioculcas prefers a semi-shaded position. It also doesn't mind shade. It can therefore easily be placed deep in the room. The harsh sun can harm the plant, causing burns or spots on the leaves. The pot in which the Zamioculcas will be placed should not be too large, so that it does not invest energy in growing underground rhizomes instead of the above-ground part.
✔️ temperature
Room temperature of 22 - 26°C is best for growing zamioculcas. A drop in temperature below 10°C will cause the plant to die.
✔️ substrate
As a general rule, Zamioculcas will grow in any substrate, as long as it is not too wet. However, make sure the substrate is permeable, humus and fertile. Add expanded clay to the bottom of the pot. Palm substrate works very well for growing zamiokulkas.
✔️ watering and fertilising
Zamioculcas stores water in its thickened leaves and tuberous rhizomes. That is why it is the best plant for forgetful people. Even if you forget to water it from time to time, nothing will happen. Water the thyme moderately when the top layer of the substrate has dried out. Excess water can cause the plant to rot. It is a good idea to feed the plant once a month with a fertiliser, such as for green plants.
Why does zamioculcas not produce new leaves?
ZZ plant is a slow-growing plant. It is renowned for its low requirements. However, it is worth remembering that, despite this, it is still a living plant and nothing can replace the care that is necessary for proper development. So, if your zamioculcas is not producing new leaves, it is most likely in a 'wait-and-see' phase. This is how it reacts to changes in conditions or care errors. There is no need to panic. Watch the plant and give it some time. Lack of new leaves can be caused by, among other things, improper soil, too frequent or infrequent watering and insufficient light. Also pay attention to the time of year. This is because a large proportion of plants go into winter dormancy. You may only need to wait for your zamiokulkas to put out new leaves.
Does Zamioculcas toxic?
Zamioculcas is sometimes portrayed as a poisonous plant. However, this is not entirely true. The plant contains oxalic acid, which is not a poison. It can only act as a skin irritant. The bitter, extremely unpleasant taste of zamiokulkas effectively discourages the potential gourmet. It is estimated that only after the consumption of about 5 kg of leaves, Zamioculcas can prove dangerous to health. It is therefore more dangerous to consume the same amount of rhubarb. Caution should therefore be taken when transplanting the plant by wearing gloves.
Zamioculcas - the money plant
According to some legends and beliefs, there are plants that are worth growing to improve your financial situation. They are said to literally attract money. Zamioculcas is one of the houseplants with this effect. For this reason, it is sometimes called the 'dollar tree'. The plant attracts money into the house all by itself. However, some dollar tree owners recommend burying coins in the ground, preferably in foreign currency.
