Dracaena characteristics

Dracaena is an exotic-looking plant, commonly referred to as dragonfruit or dragon palmetto. It is a succulent that occurs naturally in Africa, Asia, Mexico and Australia. Dracaena is a plant that will decorate any interior. However, growing it has more benefits. In addition to the visual and aesthetic aspects, dracaena improves the air quality in the environment. It effectively neutralises pollutants and absorbs harmful compounds, including formaldehyde.

Dracaena varieties and species

The genus dracaena includes around 40 plant species. The different species of dracaena vary in size, colour and leaf shape. Some of them are trees that grow to several metres high in the wild. Smaller shrubs can also be found among them. Dracaenas grown indoors do not grow as tall and rarely flower. Most of the dracaena species are perfectly suitable for cultivation as pot plants. The most common in homes are the fringed dracaena (Dracaena marginata), the fragrant dracaena (Dracaena fragrans), the dracaena deremensis (Dracaena deremensis), the inverted dracaena (Dracaena Reflexa) or the sandera dracaena (Dracaena Sanderiana).

Dracaena - growing and care

Dracaena is a strong plant. It requires no special care or expertise. So even people who generally have problems with flower cultivation can manage. This is because dracaena is forgiving of many mistakes. The basic requirements of the plant include:

The dracaena should stand in a bright place, but with diffused light. It must not be exposed to direct, strong sunlight. Dracaena also likes high humidity. During the heating season, it is a good idea to spray its leaves with water.

As befits an exotic plant, dracaena likes warmth all year round. Therefore, it is important to ensure that the temperature of the room in which the dracaena is grown does not fall below 15°C.

To grow beautifully, dracaena needs soil that is fertile, humus and impermeable. Palm soil or all-purpose soil for potted plants works well. There should be drainage at the bottom of the pot, for which you can use, for example, expanded clay or pebbles.

Proper care of the dracaena requires sparing watering, especially in autumn and winter. The plant does not like excessive moisture. During the growth period, the dracaena should be fertilised with a compound fertiliser.

Problems with dracaena

Dracaena is not a troublesome plant to grow and care for. Nor is it particularly fond of any of the pests. In most cases, dracaena diseases are the result of poor growing conditions. The most common problem is dry dracaena leaf tips. This is a result of the air being too dry, which is especially the case in winter. Sprinkling the leaves or placing the plant on a tray of water can help in this situation. If the dracaena starts to shed its leaves and its growth has stopped, this means that it is either too cold or too warm. In this case, its location should be changed. Too much increase in temperature can also cause cracks in the dracaena leaves. Dark spots appearing on the dracaena leaves may be a symptom of a bacterial disease. In this case, you should reach for a suitable disease and pest treatment. An effective way to avoid problems with your dracaena, therefore, is to provide it with basic growing conditions.
