A bird of paradise in your home!

One only has to look at the strelitzia to see its exotic origin. This is because the plant is native to South Africa, where it grows along the banks of rivers. Strelitzia is not only distinguished by its beautiful flowers, reminiscent of a bird of paradise. It also has strong, upright stems topped with magnificent leaves. The upward-pointing leaves have great decorative value in themselves. Whether it is currently in bloom or not, Strelitzia will therefore add character and liven up any interior, whether classic or modern. It is an exotic plant, so it fits perfectly into the popular urban jungle trend as an office plant or hotel plant.

Strelitzia - varieties and species

Strelitzia includes five species. Of these, royal strelitzia (Strelitzia reginae) is the most popular on the floricultural market. Due to its dazzling flowering, it is favoured by lovers of exotic plants. This is because the flowers of the royal strelitzia are characterised by their original orange-blue shades. The second species worth looking out for is the white strelitzia (Strelitzia nicolai), which has larger leaves and white flowers with blue tinges.  Both species are called birds of paradise. This is due to the characteristic shape of the inflorescence, which resembles a bird taking flight.

Strelitzia - growing

Opinions are divided as to the difficulty of growing strelitzia. However, one thing is certain, by providing the plant with the right conditions, it will repay you with its beauty and unusual flowering.

✔️ position

Due to its African origin, a bright and warm position is best for Strelitzia. Preferably with access to fresh air. Strelitzias do not tolerate draughts or proximity to a radiator.

✔️ temperature

The optimum temperature during the growth period is 20-25°C. During the resting period 15-18°C. In summer, strelitzia can be an exotic decoration on the terrace or balcony.

✔️ substrate

A fertile and permeable substrate is ideal for strelitzia. When repotting the plant, remember to provide drainage, e.g. in the form of a generous layer of expanded clay at the bottom of the pot.

✔️ watering and fertilising

During the growth period, the strelitzia needs more irrigation. However, care should be taken not to allow water to stagnate in the pot. This can cause the plant's fragile and delicate roots to rot. It is also advisable to feed the plant with fertilisers rich in potassium and phosphorus. If you want to see flowers, use a fertiliser for flowering flowers.

Even the most beautiful specimen from a reputable shop is no substitute for proper care. However, buying from a reputable shop is one of the guarantees of successful strelitzia cultivation. Above all, you are assured that the strelitzia you purchase will be healthy, free of pests and diseases. When deciding to introduce royal strelitzia into your home, pay attention to a few things.
